Dear Evan Hansen the movie is opening in theaters this weekend, and despite what you may have heard on Twitter, Broadway fans won’t want to miss it.
Adapted from the 2015 Tony-winning musical of the same name, Broadway star Ben Platt reprises his role as Evan Hansen, an anxious teenage boy who lies about his friendship with another boy at his school who dies by suicide. Directed by Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being a Wallflower), the movie brings back all of the irresistible music from composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul that had Broadway fans lining up down the street.
Filling out the A-list ensemble cast is Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, Kaitlyn Dever, Amandla Stenberg, Nik Dodani, Danny Pino, Colton Ryan, and DeMarius Copes. And yes, there is some de-aging of Platt involved to make him look like a high schooler—but you’ll want to see the film for yourself before you judge it too harshly. Here’s what to know about where to watch the Dear Evan Hansen movie, and when to expect Dear Evan Hansen on streaming.
WHERE TO WATCH DEAR EVAN HANSEN:
Right now, the only way to watch Dear Evan Hansen is to go see it in person at a movie theater. Dear Evan Hansen will open in theaters nationwide on Friday, September 24. You can find tickets a theater near you here.
WILL DEAR EVAN HANSEN BE ON HBO MAX?
No. Dear Evan Hansen is a Universal Pictures movie, not a Warner Bros. movie, and therefore will not be streaming on HBO Max when it opens in theaters. While HBO Max—which is owned by Warner Media—has been the streaming home for blockbuster Warner Bros. movies like Malignant, it will not be the streaming home for Universal movies like Dear Evan Hansen.
IS DEAR EVAN HANSEN ON NETFLIX?
No. Dear Evan Hansen is not on Netflix. However, you can get your Ben Platt fix by watching the Netflix series The Politician.
WHEN WILL DEAR EVAN HANSEN BE STREAMING?
There is not yet a digital or VOD release date for Dear Evan Hansen, and it’s hard to say when you’ll be able to stream the musical movie.
Previously Universal movies had been releasing on digital after 17 days in theaters, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, lately, the studio has been keeping its movies in theaters for much longer than 17 days. For example, the Universal movie Old opened in theaters back in July, but is still not on VOD after over 45 days in theaters.
That said, Respect, the Aretha Franklin biopic from Universal Pictures, was available to rent for $20 on premium video-on-demand just two weeks after its theatrical release.
In other words, Universal is no longer following a consistent digital release strategy. The wait for Dear Evan Hansen on digital could be anywhere from two weeks to two months, or longer. Until we get some official information, your best bet to see the movie ASAP is to grab your vaccination card and head to your nearest movie theater.
